The Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating (CIPH) and the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada (MCA Canada) jointly held a highly successful Parliamentary Day of Awareness on April 8th in Ottawa. Represented by their Executive Committees, they met with several key officials and Parliamentarians to enhance the profile of the industry in government circles as well as discuss two key items of mutual concern, specifically; Prompt Payment Provisions in Federal Contracts, and Bi-National Regulatory Co-operation & Streamlined Standards.

On April 7th CIPH representatives met with Senior Staff at the Embassy of the United States to ask for Canadian exemptions to the Buy American Act.

Following these meetings, an evening reception was sponsored by Manitoba Senator Don Plett. Among his many contributions throughout the day included a formal reading in the Senate that recognized both organizations as well as World Plumbing Day.

Robert Whitty, (Bartle & Gibson Co. Ltd.), Chairman of CIPH said, “CIPH and MCA Canada support the efforts of the Regulatory Cooperation Council and agree that establishing a joint Canada-U.S. standards secretariat will help facilitate the true harmonization of standards and testing and certification requirements through the creation of North American consensus standards. Consensus standards will deliver cost savings, productivity gains, and facilitate a greater speed to market.”

In addition, CIPH and MCA Canada supported efforts to enact Prompt Payment legislation.

“The Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada is spearheading efforts to enact Prompt Payment initiatives, both federally and provincially, in partnership with CIPH and the National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada (NTCCC). As a founding member of NTCCC, MCA Canada and eleven additional national trade associations are actively lobbying for change in the construction environment by enabling Prompt Payment legislation across Canada.”, said MCA Canada Chairman Gaetan Beaulieu (Beaulieu Plumbing & Mechanical).

The CIPH/MCA Canada Parliamentary Day of Awareness is a joint event held annually on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
